Slices of Heaven: 58 Great Connecticut Pizza Places
New Haven Pizza Truck
Travels to all of Connecticut
Descended from a long line of Italian bakers, owner Frank Bernardo learned the tricks of the trade from his father, Naples native Luigi Bernardo, the driving force of the now-closed Gigi’s Pizza in New Haven. After starting restaurants of his own, Frank found he “missed his pizza roots,” and started helping out original Big Green Truck Pizza owner Douglas Coffin, before again branching out on his own. Armed with his father’s recipes, he transformed an old 1946 International fire truck into the first New Haven Pizza Truck. Now in his 10th year, Bernardo has five wood-fire-brick oven-loaded trucks working out of his North Haven base of operations, where they make all the ingredients from scratch the way Pops did it. They stay busy with weddings and private events, but the truck can also be found at New Haven-area spots like the Orange Farmers Market and vineyards.—Albie Yuravich
